A bit about me....

After graduating from Goldsmiths College London, I pursued a career in textiles working for large corporate companies before running my own holiday and events business. My long-standing passion for geology led me to carving stone. Learning to carve stone felt like a natural way to express myself and the perfect link to between art and geology. My inspiration for garden sculpture usually comes from natural forms and patterns and often from rock itself, I love fossils and strata and also find inspiration in my garden.

I love to draw and have found a great relationship between the charcoal stick with which I draw and the chisel with which I carve. With garden sculpture I like to carve boldly often experimenting with shape or texture in the design of sculptural forms, always referring to her drawings for my inspiration. My drawings are the foundation of much of my work. I love the creation of chisel marks on slate and the deep textures I apply to Bath and Portland stone.

A passion for poetry and rhyme is the source of inspiration for letter cutting. I often include images and texture to convey the words selected and enhance the design and sentiment. Travel is also a design inspiration with recent trips to Morocco the south of France influencing my work as well as the beauty of the Devon coastline and moorland where I live. Please take a look at the gallery pages to view examples of my garden sculpture, garden bowls and letter cutting work.

The Waymarker Project – by Zoe Singleton

The Waymarker Project’ was commissioned by Torbay Culture with emergency funding from Arts Council England. Zoe Singleton collaborated with staff at Torbay Hospital and the team at HeARTS (Health and the Arts in Torbay and South Devon), to create five Waymarker stones that will form the foundation of a future sculpture trail around the hospital grounds.

The Waymarker stones feature words that were submitted to Zoe by the hospital staff about the importance of the hospital’s outdoor spaces to the staff, particularly during the Covid 19 pandemic. Zoe asked the staff to submit words in their first language and their own handwriting in order that the stones reflect the valued diversity of the staff working within the hospital. Zoe then created a hand drawn script from the selected words that maintained elements of the individual’s hand as well as creating harmony and unity across the many languages submitted.

These words were divided across the stones into 5 themes of Friendship, Peace, Nature, Reflection and Rest. Now carved, the stones have been installed in the hospital grounds providing spaces along a journey to pause, think and reflect.
