My studio is at Black Barns Devon ( www.blackbarnsdevon.co.uk ) From here run a programme of creative courses including my stone carving courses which are sutiable for beginners. The studio is set in the beautiful rolling landscape of Devon with views across the valley and up to the hills of Dartmoor. 

Our courses offer practical skills, creative thinking and the opportunity to connect with other like-minded ‘creatives’ and aim to extend your experience of designing, thinking and making.

 

This Autumn/Winter I will be running the following range of weekend workshops, Please see below for dates and details.

The studio is well lit and spacious however due to distancing restrictions I will only be having a maximum of 4 students per workshop as always face masks will be available along with hand sanitiser.

 

I am also able to run bespoke courses for groups of 4 - 6 people, these can be mid-week if required.

 

"BOWLED OVER" -  CARVE YOUR OWN GARDEN PLANTER IN BATH STONE - A TWO DAY COURSE - Autumn/Winter Dates.                                                                           20th-21st February 2021 (fully booked) 21st - 22nd March 2021 (fully booked)                                  8th -9th May 2021.      17th - 18th July 2021

This workshop will teach you a range of stone carving skills to enable you to create a contemporary garden planter pot for your home or garden

 

On day one you will learn basic skills of stone carving using a range of chisels and a mallet. Beginning by carving a block of Bath stone into a cylinder, then learning how to shape curves, and how to hollow out. We will also plan and design the decoration of your pot.

 

On day two you finish carving out your bowl then transfer your designs on to the pot and use various decorative techniques to pattern the stone. You will also learn how to finish the top to a contrasting smooth surface. Then add a plant and its ready to take home. No previous experience required.

 

Tea and coffee facilites, use of tools and materials are all included. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.

"WORD UP" - CARVE RAISED LETTERING IN PORTLAND STONE - A TWO DAY COURSE.  Autumn/Winter dates                   24th - 25th October 2020 (fully booked )                     5th - 6th December 2020(fully booked)                                                                 8th- 9th May 2021                                                 21st - 22nd August 2021

This new course will focus on carving bold raised letters into stone.

 

On day one you will begin by looking at raised letter design design and most particuarly Neuland Script. We will then design our letters to form a short word four or five letter word in this bold chunky style where the letters are raised out of the stone rather than cut into it. Then we will transfer the letters to the stone and begin the process of carving them out.

 

On Day two we will be doing a lot more carving and refining of our letter shapes as well as flattening and texturing the background to make the letters stand out.

 

Tea and coffee facilites, use of tools and materials are all included. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.

"BEETLE MANIA" - RELIEF CARVED INSECTS IN PORTLAND STONE - A TWO DAY COURSE. Autumn/Winter Dates                   16th - 17th January 2021                                                     24th - 25th April 2021        5th - 6th June 2021 

 

A new course focusing on relief carving in Portland Stone, We will be looking at insects and making a larger than life carving, (about 15cm square) of a beetle, bee or small creature of your choice. 

 

Day one will begin with some simple carving exercises to learn technique then we will be planning the design on to the stone and working out the different layers of the relief carving before begining carving.

The afternoon will be spent carving and finding the form of our insect within the stone.

 

Day two will begin with more carving and refining of the form as well as developing the back ground texture. We will then be looking at finishing techniques, undercutting and polishing all of which will being tour insect to life.

 

Tea and coffee facilites, use of tools and materials are all included. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.
