My studio is situated in Landrake just over the Tamar Bridge in East Cornwall, Tamar Valley -  From here I run a programme of Creative Courses around  stone carving which are sutiable for beginners as well as developing the skills of those with some experience. My new studio is set in the beautiful rolling landscape of the Tamar Valley surrounded by farmland but very easy to access from the A38. There is also accommodation availble locally.
My courses offer practical skills, creative thinking and the opportunity to connect with other like-minded ‘creatives’ and aim to extend your experience of designing, thinking and making.

'                    STONE FOR THE GARDEN - CARVE YOUR OWN GARDEN PLANTER OR BIRD BOWL IN BATH STONE

 

                                     LOVE LETTERS -  THE ART OF LETTERING IN PORTLAND STONE AND SLATE

 

                                   CARVING FROM NATURE - RELIEF CARVING INSPIRED BY NATURE AROUND US 

 

 

My studio is well lit and spacious -  I will only be having a maximum of 5 students per workshop, there is also the opportunity to work outside whether dependant.

 

I am also able to run bespoke courses for groups of up to 5 people, these can be mid-week if required.

 

STONE FOR THE GARDEN -  CARVE YOUR OWN GARDEN PLANTER OR BIRD BOWL IN BATH STONE - A TWO DAY COURSE -  25TH/26TH OCTOBER 2025 (1 Space) 24th/25 JANUARY 2026 (Spaces)

This workshop will teach you a range of stone carving skills to enable you to create a beautiful  garden planter or small bird bowl for your garden in Bath stone

 

On day one you will learn basic skills of stone carving using a range of chisels and a mallet. Beginning by carving a block of Bath stone into a cylinder, Bath Stone is a soft British limestone which is great for beginners to learn to carve on. Then you will be learning how to shape curves, and how to hollow out. We will also plan and design the decoration of your pot.

 

On day two you finish carving out your bowl then transfer your designs on to the pot and use various decorative techniques to pattern the stone. You will also learn how to finish the top to a contrasting smooth surface. Then add a plant and its ready to take home. No previous experience required.

 

Tea and coffee facilites, use of tools and materials are all included. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.

LOVE LETTERS? -  LEARN TO CARVE LETTERING IN PORTLAND STONE OR SLATE - A TWO DAY COURSE.  7TH/8TH MARCH (1 space)

 LEARN TO CARVE LETTERING IN PORTLAND STONE OR SLATE - A TWO DAY COURSE. 
If you love letters and words this is the course for you. This course will focus on carving bold expressive raised or incised letters into stone. You could carve a name, a house sign or just a word you love.
 
On day one you will begin by looking at lettering design and script to suit your choice of word. We will then design our letters to form a short word in an expressive style. Then we will transfer the letters to the stone and then begin the process of carving them out and getting familiar with chisel techniques for letter carving.
 
On Day two we will be doing a lot more carving of our chosen word/s and refining of our letter shapes as well as texturing the backgrounds or edges to make the letters stand out. 
 
Tea and coffee facilites, use of tools and materials are all included. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.

CARVING FROM NATURE  - RELIEF CARVING INSPIRED BY NATURE AROUND US - A TWO DAY COURSE  29TH/30TH NOVEMBER 2025 (1 space) 

A new course focusing on relief carving in Stone, We will be looking at the nature around us , making a larger than life carvings, (about 15cm square) of leaves, flowers or small insect of your choice.   

 

Day one will begin with some simple carving exercises to learn technique then we will be planning the design on to the stone and working out the different layers of the relief carving before begining carving. The afternoon will be spent carving and finding the form of our design within the stone.  

 

Day two will begin with more carving and refining of the form as well as developing the back ground texture. We will then be looking at finishing techniques, undercutting and polishing all of which will bring  your carving to life.

 

Tea and coffee, use of tools and materials are all included. Face masks and gloves if required. 10am till 5pm each day. Please bring a packed lunch.
